Bioneer's subsidiary AceBiome, World Institute of Kimchi Sign Agreement for Joint Health Probiotic Technology
AceBiome, a subsidiary of Bioneer specializing in functional health supplements, announced on the 24th that it has signed a technology transfer and research collaboration agreement with the World Institute of Kimchi (WIKIM) at the Bioneer Global Center in Daejeon.
The partnership aims to develop globally competitive functional ingredients derived from kimchi probiotics and strengthen cooperation between industry and research institutions.
Under the agreement, AceBiome has acquired technology related to joint health improvement based on the anti-inflammatory and cartilage-protective effects of Lactobacillus plantarum, a kimchi-derived lactic acid bacterium.
Preliminary studies have demonstrated its potential benefits for joint health, and related patents have been filed, securing a solid scientific foundation.
AceBiome plans to advance the technology toward commercialization through further functionality testing and human clinical trials for certification by Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS).
The company aims to develop evidence-based joint health functional foods that meet international standards. Both institutions agreed to collaborate in joint R&D, academic and technical exchange, and shared use of facilities and expertise. This partnership is expected to become a model for cooperation between a national research institute and a commercialization-driven enterprise, contributing to the growth of Korea’s biohealth industry.
Dr. Hae-Choon Jang, Director of WIKIM, said, “This agreement marks an important milestone in transforming kimchi-derived probiotics into global biohealth materials through AceBiome’s industrial capabilities.”
AceBiome CEO Myung-Hee Kim added, “AceBiome will leverage its expertise in functional probiotics to bring WIKIM’s outstanding kimchi-derived strains to consumers worldwide as trusted health supplements.”
Founded in 2017, AceBiome focuses on microbiome-based probiotics and natural functional materials. WIKIM, under the Ministry of Science and ICT, holds a collection of over 1,400 kimchi-derived microbial resources.
